It was a family affair at the National Polo Center on Sunday, and the elder Cambiaso came out on top. La Dolfina/Tamera beat La Dolfina/Catamount 12-8 to win the 2025 U.S. Open Polo Championship and close the American high-goal season.
The final
Alejandro Poma was named Most Valuable Player after a team-high four goals, with Adolfo Cambiaso adding three. The winners also had Diego Cavanagh and Matt Coppola, who added the U.S. Open to the C.V. Whitney Cup. On the other side, Adolfo’s son Poroto scored five goals, but his side, completed by Scott Devon, Rufino Merlos and Jesse Bray, ran out of time for a comeback.
- La Dolfina/Tamera: Adolfo Cambiaso, Diego Cavanagh, Matt Coppola and Alejandro Poma
- La Dolfina/Catamount: Scott Devon, Rufino Merlos, Poroto Cambiaso and Jesse Bray
How they got there
The semi-finals were played on Wednesday 16 April. La Dolfina/Tamera beat Coca-Cola 9-4, while La Dolfina/Catamount edged Park Place 11-9. That set up an all-La Dolfina final and guaranteed that a Cambiaso would lift the trophy.
A record to remember
It was the tenth U.S. Open title for Adolfo, who is now the second most successful player in the history of the tournament. Only Memo Gracida, with 16 titles, has won more, and the win put Cambiaso one clear of Carlos Gracida. He turned 50 last Tuesday, and he celebrated in the best possible way.
Coca-Cola, who finished as runners-up in both the C.V. Whitney Cup and the USPA Gold Cup, were beaten again in the semi-finals, and they will be wondering what it takes to close out a Gauntlet event. Park Place, who won the Gold Cup, also fell at the penultimate stage.
The season in review
Here is how the Gauntlet of Polo finished:
- C.V. Whitney Cup: La Dolfina/Tamera beat Coca-Cola 11-10.
- USPA Gold Cup: Park Place beat Coca-Cola 10-9 in overtime.
- U.S. Open: La Dolfina/Tamera beat La Dolfina/Catamount 12-8.
The action now moves to Europe. The English high-goal season begins in earnest in May and June, and the Argentines who have been playing in Florida will be arriving in Windsor and Cowdray soon enough. We will be there to bring you all of it.
