The ninth Argentine Women’s Open has begun, and La Dolfina have started in commanding style. Played between 24 November and 6 December, the three-team competition has already produced two wins for the Cambiaso family’s team.
The teams
- La Dolfina (36 goals): Hope Arellano of the USA (10), Catalina Lavinia of Argentina (8), Mia Cambiaso of Argentina (9) and Milly Hine of England (9).
- El Overo Z7 UAE Polo (36 goals): Hazel Jackson of England (10), Candelaria Fernández Araujo of Argentina (10), Carina Clarkin of New Zealand (9) and Maitena Marré of Argentina (7).
- La Hache Pax (32 goals): Milagros Sánchez (8), Clara Cassino (8), Lía Salvo (9) and Elena Venot of France (7).
It is a truly international field. Hine and Jackson represent England, Venot represents France and Clarkin represents New Zealand, alongside the Argentine and American players. Several of them featured earlier this year: Hine and Fernández Araujo won the USPA Women’s Polo Open with Buena Vibra in February, Venot played for France at Cirencester Park in June, and Mia Cambiaso won the Gold Cup at Cowdray with her father in July.
The results so far
- 24 November, Pilar: La Dolfina 18, La Hache Pax 10.
- 27 November, Pilar: La Dolfina 11, El Overo Z7 UAE Polo 7.
La Dolfina have won both of their matches, and the third league match, between El Overo Z7 UAE Polo and La Hache Pax, takes place on 3 December. That match decides who finishes second in the table, and the final is set for 6 December at Palermo.
The men’s Argentine Open
At Palermo, the men’s Argentine Open is heading for its semi-finals. UAE Polo beat Los Machitos on 25 November in what La Nación described as a struggle, and La Natividad La Dolfina remain unbeaten this season. The decisive dates are the semi-finals in the first week of December and the final on Sunday 7 December.
It is an excellent week for Argentine polo, with the women’s and men’s Opens building to their finals within a day of each other. We will have full reports on both next Monday.
