India Beat Argentina 10-9 at the KogniVera International Polo Cup in Jaipur Polo Ground, Delhi

One of the surprises of the polo autumn came from New Delhi. On Saturday 25 October, India beat Argentina 10-9 in the KogniVera International Polo Cup at the historic Jaipur Polo Ground.

A close finish

The match was tight from the start. Both teams traded goals rapidly, and it went down to the final chukka before India secured the decisive goal in the closing moments. The Indian side was led by Sawai Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur, with Simran Singh Shergill as captain. Argentina arrived in Delhi as the world’s top ranked polo nation, so a one-goal home win was a significant result for Indian polo.

  • Result: India 10, Argentina 9
  • Venue: Jaipur Polo Ground, New Delhi
  • Date: Saturday 25 October

The win was presented as a boost for Indian polo and for Delhi’s standing as a venue for the sport. A trophy presentation took place at sunset, and the report credits the energy of the home crowd. The match was played during the Delhi Fall Polo season, which began on 13 October and runs until 30 November.

India’s polo heritage

India has one of the oldest polo traditions in the world. The Hurlingham Polo Association, which turned 150 this year, extended its membership in 1903 to associations across the Empire where polo was played, and India was among the great polo countries of that era. A modern Indian side beating Argentina is a reminder of how far the game has travelled.

Back in Argentina

Meanwhile the Tortugas Open is nearing its conclusion. La Natividad La Dolfina and Ellerstina Indios ChapaleufĂș won their zones, and the final, which is still to be played, will decide the second leg of the Triple Crown. Palermo follows on 31 October. We will bring you the Tortugas final result next week.

With the Argentine Open, the Delhi season and the build-up to the English winter internationals all in motion, this is a busy few weeks for polo.
