Arena polo had its biggest weekend of the year. On Sunday 12 October, the United States beat Argentina 16-14 in the final of the II FIP Arena Polo World Championship at Roseland Polo Club in Crozet, Virginia.
An unbeaten pair in the final
Both finalists reached the final undefeated, which set up a fitting decider before a sold-out arena. The US team of Kareem Rosser, Patrick Uretz and Jared Sheldon took the title, and Uretz was named Most Valuable Player. In the bronze medal match, France, the defending champions, beat Guatemala 26-13.
- Dates: 5 to 12 October
- Venue: Roseland Polo Club, Crozet, Virginia, co-hosted with Virginia Polo Inc. in Charlottesville
- Nations: Argentina, the United States, France, Guatemala, Italy and Pakistan
- Level: teams of up to 12 goals
History in the arena
It was the first time the championship had been played in the United States. France won the first edition in 2023 at La Carona Polo Club in Exaltación de la Cruz, Argentina, so the title has now moved from Europe to North America. The result also continues a good year for the US arena game, and the champions, Sheldon, Rosser and Uretz, are well known on the American circuit.
Tortugas gets going
Back on grass in Argentina, the Tortugas Open began on Friday 10 October, the second leg of the Triple Crown. In Zone A, La Natividad La Dolfina beat Sol de Agosto 22-12, and Los Machitos El Refugio edged La Irenita La Hache 15-14. On Saturday, in Zone B, UAE Polo beat La Hache Cría y Polo 18-12, and Ellerstina Indios Chapaleufú won a thriller against La Ensenada 16-15.
La Natividad La Dolfina arrive at Tortugas having won the Hurlingham Open, and the early result suggests the form is holding. The Tortugas Open is the 85th edition and takes place at the Tortugas Country Club.
Looking ahead
With the arena world title decided and the grass season in full swing, the focus turns to Argentina for the rest of the autumn. The Argentine Open in Palermo will follow Tortugas, and we will keep you informed week by week.
