Europe’s high summer ended with two big wins. In Spain, Amanara won the Sotogrande Gold Cup, and in Normandy Talandracas collected the Coupe d’Or in Deauville.
Sotogrande: a double for Amanara
Amanara beat Dos Lunas 13-9 in the high-handicap Gold Cup final on Saturday 30 August at Ayala Polo Club. It was their second major title of the summer at the club, after the Silver Cup, where they beat Black Bears 12-9 on 16 August. Bartolomé Castagnola was named best player of the final. The Sotogrande summer series ran from 28 July to 30 August, and the Gold Cup drew some of the biggest names in the game, including Barto and Jeta Castagnola, Poroto Cambiaso, Polito Pieres, Hilario Ulloa, Tomás Panelo and Pablo Mac Donough.
- Final: Amanara 13, Dos Lunas 9
- Silver Cup: Amanara 12, Black Bears 9
- Bronze Cup: won by Les Lions and Sainte Mesme in extra time over Amanara
Hartog Polo Team also took the low-handicap Gold Cup, beating Esso 8-5, and Electric Polo won the medium category, beating Muda IZ Polo 10-5. Sotogrande’s three-tier structure means players of all levels can take part in a Gold Cup final.
Deauville: Talandracas win again
At the 76th Coupe d’Or in Deauville, Talandracas won the tournament for the seventh time in its history, according to the organisers. The event, which ran from 18 to 31 August as part of the Barrière Deauville Polo Cup, is one of the oldest on the French calendar, and a seventh win is a fine tribute to a team that has been a fixture of European polo for years.
The season turns
The English season is winding down, and attention is shifting to Argentina, where the Triple Crown begins in just over three weeks. We will have a full preview of the teams next Monday. The Hurlingham Open, Tortugas Open and Palermo Open make up the southern hemisphere’s biggest events, and this year the field looks fascinating.
Congratulations to Amanara, Talandracas and all the winners across the Sotogrande and Deauville programmes.
