Sotogrande Polo 2025: Amanara Win the Silver Cup as the Gold Cup Begins at Ayala

Sotogrande’s polo summer reaches its climax this month, and the first big result is in. Amanara won the Silver Cup in the high-handicap category, beating Black Bears 12-9 in the final on 16 August at Ayala Polo Club.

The Silver Cup results

The Copa de Plata, which ran from 4 to 16 August, produced winners in all three handicap categories:

  • High handicap: Amanara beat Black Bears 12-9.
  • Medium handicap: Brunei Polo Team beat Electric Polo 11-10, a one-goal margin.
  • Low handicap: Calatagan beat La Capilla 12-8.

The medium handicap final was the tightest of the three, and Brunei Polo Team had to hold off Electric Polo until the end.

The Bronze Cup

The Bronze Cup, which ran from 28 July to 2 August, set the scene. In the high handicap final, Les Lions and Sainte Mesme beat Amanara in extra time, so Amanara have had a good run of results in Sotogrande this summer. In the medium category, Muda IZ Polo beat John Smith 15-10, and in the low handicap Legacy beat Hartog Polo Team 13-8.

Gold Cup now

The Gold Cup, the Copa de Oro, begins today, 18 August, and runs through to the end of the month. It is the premier tournament of the Sotogrande summer, and the Ayala Polo Club has attracted a strong field. U.S. Polo Assn. is a partner of the event and provides a prize for the most valuable player.

A word on the venue

Sotogrande has been a polo destination for decades, and the tournaments are played on the Los Pinos grounds, which are often called the Santa Maria grounds. Since 2021 they have been leased to the Ayala Polo Club, which is the official name now.

The Gold Cup final is expected at the end of the month, and we will follow the progress of the tournament. Amanara, with a Silver Cup in the bag, will start among the favourites.
