With less than three weeks to go, the teams are in for the HPA’s International Day at Guards Polo Club. England and Brazil meet for the Coronation Cup on Saturday 26 July, in a match that forms the centrepiece of the HPA’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
The line-ups
- England: Tommy Beresford (7, captain), Max Charlton (6), Louis Hine (5) and Ollie Cudmore (5).
- Brazil: JP Ganon (7), Rodrigo Andrade (8), Pedrinho Zacharias (8) and Marcelo Camargo (2).
Brazil’s trio of high-goal players is formidable on paper. Andrade and Zacharias are both rated 8, and Ganon is a 7. England, meanwhile, have named a side that blends experience with the energy of youth. Hine is still early in his career but was the match winner for England in the Golden Jubilee last month, and Beresford has captained England before, leading them to victory in the Westchester Cup.
The head to head
England have won all three previous Coronation Cup meetings with Brazil, in 1996, 2001 and 2011, by scores of 8-4, 8-7 and 8-6. Brazil would dearly like to change that, and they have a strong international record that includes World Championship titles.
The Whitbread Tankard
The day opens with the Whitbread Tankard, played by Young England. They face Young Argentina, in a rematch of last year’s contest, in which Young England snatched victory in the final seconds. Hine leads the young Englishmen, and the match is a good indicator of where the next generation stands.
Celebrating the clubs
The HPA says International Day will also celebrate clubs and community, and it marks 150 years since the first official rules of polo. The event has drawn crowds of more than 30,000 in the past, so we would advise anyone planning to attend to book early and travel in good time.
- Date: Saturday 26 July
- Venue: Guards Polo Club, Windsor Great Park
- Main match: England v Brazil, Coronation Cup
- Opening match: Young England v Young Argentina, Whitbread Tankard
The weeks ahead also include the semi-finals and final of the Gold Cup for the British Open at Cowdray, which finishes on 20 July. Polo fans in England have a great fortnight to look forward to, and we will cover every part of it.
