A weekend of one-goal finals. Park Place won the Cartier Queen’s Cup at Guards on Sunday, and England came from behind to win the Golden Jubilee at the Beaufort International on Saturday.
Queen’s Cup: Park Place at the fifth attempt
Park Place beat La Dolfina/Marqués de Riscal 9-8 in the final, in what was reported to be their fifth attempt at the trophy. Andrey Borodin received the cup from Laurent Feniou, managing director of Cartier UK, and Hilario Ulloa was named Cartier Most Valuable Player. Ulloa also took the best playing pony prize, for his mare Why Not I’m Easy. Park Place had beaten Dubai 15-13 in the semi-finals, with Rosendo Torreguitar the semi-final MVP.
Golden Jubilee: Hine’s eight
At Beaufort, England beat the USA 9-8 in the 16-goal Golden Jubilee. Louis Hine scored within 15 seconds, but the USA led 5-3 at half-time. England then scored five goals to one in a tremendous fourth chukka, including two Hine penalties to level at 5-5 and a neck shot from Tommy Severn to take the lead. Hine finished with eight goals and was named Most Valuable Player.
- England: Alfie Hyde (3), Louis Hine (5), Ed Banner-Eve (5) and Tommy Severn (5, captain).
- USA: Hunter Azzaro (0), Nico Escobar (6), Mackenzie Weisz (6) and Lucas Escobar (6).
Nico Escobar’s mare Delicia took the best playing pony award, and England’s coach, Glen Gilmore, made his debut in the match. Earlier, Young England and Young USA drew 6-6 in the Buckmaster Trophy, the first time the trophy has ever been shared.
A sad week for polo
The weekend followed difficult news. The HPA confirmed that Sunjay Kapur, patron of the Aureus polo team, died after becoming unwell during a match at Guards on Thursday 12 June. The HPA said the incident was not playing-related and that it was supporting those involved. Our thoughts are with his family, his teammates and everyone at the club.
Next up
The Gold Cup for the British Open begins at Cowdray Park on 24 June, and the HPA’s International Day follows on 26 July. We will have more soon.
