HPA Polo Awards 2025: Nina Clarkin Receives the Medal of Honour at the Underglobe

Last Monday, the HPA hosted the Polo Awards at the Underglobe in London, with more than 160 guests from across the polo community. The evening honoured the 2024 season and also marked the association’s 150th anniversary.

The special awards

The biggest honour of the night went to Nina Clarkin, who received the HPA Medal of Honour for her career and her impact on polo in the UK and internationally. She has captained the England women’s team and began her international career at the age of 18, so it was a fitting recognition for one of the most respected players in the country.

  • Standing Rock Fair Play Award: Ferne Park, for sportsmanship and commitment to the spirit of the game.
  • Ainsley Saddlery Performance Pathway Award: Atticus Burnett, for his contribution to the HPA’s Performance Pathway in 2024.
  • International Award: the Diamond Jubilee team of Nina Clarkin, Hazel Jackson, Milly Hine and Charlotte Pykett, for their win over Argentina on 22 June 2024.

The Victor Ludorum winners

The Victor Ludorum trophies, which recognise the winners of the HPA’s handicap series, went as follows:

  • 22 Goal: La Dolfina Great Oaks
  • 18 Goal: Emlor
  • 15 Goal: Emlor
  • 12 Goal: Standing Rock
  • 8 Goal: Kulin Rock
  • 6 Goal: Wildebeest
  • 4 Goal: St Paul/Cambridge Neurotech
  • Victrix 16 Goal: La Mariposa USA
  • Arena 15 Goal: Red Star
  • Arena 12 Goal: Red Star
  • Arena 6 Goal: Senzaltro

Why it matters

Karl Ude Martinez hosted the evening, and Will Lucas, Jamie Morrison, Anna Hall and Sean Donovan-Smith presented the awards. It is the sort of occasion that tends to get overlooked outside the sport, but it matters. British polo depends heavily on volunteers, grooms, coaches and club organisers, and an awards night is a chance to thank them.

Emlor’s double in the 15 and 18 goal series is worth noting, as is the continuing strength of Red Star in the arena game. The Medal of Honour for Clarkin also gives the women’s game a deserved boost.

Congratulations to all the winners, and to the HPA for a celebration that did the anniversary justice.
